Rabbit Hutch And Run

The status of the rabbit as a pet has changed dramatically in recent years. For many it is no longer the forgotten pet in a hutch at the bottom of the garden; instead it has become the third most popular pet after the dog and cat, and social changes suggest that their popularity is set to increase.

Rabbits are very social creatures, and benefit from company, either from another rabbit or their owners. You can keep rabbits together as long as both are neutered but guinea pigs and rabbits should be kept apart, as a rabbit can hurt and do serious damage to the guinea pig with a single kick from its back feet.

You can keep a rabbit either indoors or outdoors. They may be kept in a hutch in the garden, shed, garage or an indoor kennel in the house. Wherever you keep them follow these basic principles:

  • Give them as much space as possible, with the opportunity for free exercise for 4 hours daily.
  • The accommodation should offer one sheltered, dark retreat. This `den' mimics the burrow and offers a place of safety in which to hide.
  • Make their accommodation high enough to allow it to stand full stretch on its hind legs.
  • Make sure they are not exposed to direct sunlight in the heat of the day as they are particularly susceptible to heat stroke
